Joe A. Palacio, 86 of Garden City, Kansas died Friday, September 13, 2013 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kansas. He was born November 10, 1926 in Swink, Colorado the son of Carmen & Benita Palacio.

Joe grew up in the La Junta, Colorado area where he worked at the sugar beet factory. One May 16, 1948, he married Guadalupe D. “Lupe” Duran in LaJunta, Colorado. They moved to the Garden City, Kansas area in the 1950’s where Joe worked as a farm laborer. He moved into Garden City in 1970 and went to work at Farmland Industries. Joe also worked for the Garden City Co-op and the State of Kansas. He retired in 1992. Joe was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, building things with wood, working on old cars and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include five sons Louis Palacio of Garden City, Ks., Joe Palacio, Jr. of Pearland, Tx., Robert Palacio of Garden City, Ks., Art Palacio of Garden City, Ks., and Anthony Palacio of Garden City, Ks.; two daughters Sandra Herrada of Garden City, Ks. and Gloria Garcia of Grand Junction, Co.; four sisters Pauline Guerrero of La Junta, Co., Josie Romero of La Junta, Co., Rosie Munoz of La Junta, Co., and Ramona Sanchez of West Virginia; seventeen grandchildren; 34 greatgrandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Joe is preceded in death by his wife Lupe who died on December 4, 2005. He is also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Mike Palacio and Salvador Palacio; two sisters Adelina Pantoya and Mary De La Riva; and a grandson.

Visitation: 1:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday , at Garnand funeral Home in Garden City.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Charles Seiwert as Celebrant.

Interment: Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City, Ks.

The family requests memorials given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
