Scott City sweeps doubleheader in Larned

Larned, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final non-league games of the regular season, Scott City made the trip to Larned to face the Indians in a doublehader that would have implications on postseason seeding. The Beavers would pick up a road win for the boys and girls, as the Lady Beavers pulled away in the final quarter for a 55-42 win, while the boys jumped out big and never looked back in a 72-28 rout.

Scott City would trail early on against the Lady Indians getting down 5-2 early, before the lead would go back and forth in the opening frame. After being tied at 16 after the first quarter, the Lady Beavers scored the first five points of the second quarter to go up 21-16 with 5:40 left in the half. The Lady Indians would strike back and pull to within 21-20 midway through the second quarter. Scott City (10-7) closed the half on a 8-1 run to lead 29-21 at the break. Larned (7-8) would come out strong to begin the second half, going on a 14-5 run to lead 35-34 with 2:30 left in the third frame. The Lady Beavers would settle down closing out the third quarter on a 6-2 run to lead 40-37 heading into the fourth stanza. Despite hitting one field goal in the third quarter, Scott City would connect on three of them in the final period, going 9-14 in the final eight minutes to pull away for a 55-42 win. They held the Lady Indians to one field goal, which came with around 6:15 left, and used a 12-2 run to close the game.
Kendall Gentry had a season-high 15 points to lead Scott City, while Avery Lewis added 10. The Lady Beavers went 27-37 from the free throw line and had 17 turnovers. Larned got 15 points from Jadyn Crosby, as the Lady Indians shot 11-19 fromt the foul line and committed 16 turnovers.
With the win, Scott City has now won six straight, and eight of the last 10 in the series. They now lead the all-time series 18-14. The Lady Beavers finish 6-2 in non conference play. Scott City is now in the sixth spot in the postseason standings, while Larned is tied with Lakin for the 10th position.

The Beavers wasted little time putting the game away, as they had runs of five, five, seven in the first quarter. Over a stretch of eight minutes of the first and second periods, Scott City (13-4) went on a 31-3 run to lead 41-7 with 4:26 left before halftime. Larned (5-10) struggled taking care of the ball, as they had 10 turnovers in the opening quarter, as the Beavers took a 47-16 lead at the break. They would open the third quarter with a 15-2 run and led 62-18 with two minutes left in the third stanza. Both teams would score 10 points the rest of the way, as a continuous clock was used in the final quarter, as Scott City dominated 72-28.
Jackson Rumford had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Beavers, while Alex Tarango had 11 and Junior Meza added 10. Scott City was 9-13 from the charity line and had nine turnovers. Larned got 10 off the bench from Kylier Greene, as they were 4-8 from the foul line and had 20 turnovers.
With the win, Scott City has now won seven straight and nine of the last 11 in the series. They now hold a 29-7 lead in the series. Larned dropped their fifth straight game. The Beavers remain in a tie for third place with Norton and Holcomb in the postseason standings, while Larned is in the 12th spot.
