Scott City sweeps Hutch Trinity to open Sterling Invitational

Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the opening day of the Sterling Invitational, the Scott City Beaver basketball teams entered as favorites in their tournament openers, as they faced the Celtics of Hutchinson Trinity Catholic on Tuesday afternoon in Sterling. It would be a dominating doubleheader sweep for the Beavers, as the Lady Beavers cruised to a 61-19 win, while the Scott City boys blew out the Celtics 79-27.

While the Lady Beavers were sluggish to open the first and second half, they were able to get it going in each half, and in a big way. The Lady Celtics actually led 4-2 with 4:37 left in the first quarter, but their lone lead of the game would last less than 10 seconds. Scott City (5-5) scored the next 19 points over a six-minute stretch, as they led 21-4 with 6:17 left before the break. After Hutch Trinity (1-8) scored a basket, the Lady Beavers closed out the final five minutes of the half on a 13-4 run to lead 34-10 at the break. To open the second half, Scott City scored the first four points of the third, only to see the Lady Celtics respond with five straight. The Lady Beavers use an 11-1 run to lead 49-16 with under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Scott City led 52-18 heading into the final quarter, where the outscored Trinity Catholic 9-1 in the fourth quarter that saw a continuous clock, and cruised to a 61-19 win.
Katie Weathers came off the bench to pour in a career-high 13 points to lead Scott City, while Megan Trout added 10 points. The Lady Beavers 15-18 from the free throw line and committed 14 turnovers. Hutchinson Trinity got eight points from Cienna Maskil, as the Lady Celtics went 6-9 at the charity line and had 30 turnovers.
With the win, Scott City is now 2-0 against Hutchinson Trinity, and have won their tournament opener for a fourth consecutive season. The Lady Celtics haven’t won a tournament opener since 2020.

Scott City Boys 79, Hutchinson Trinity 27
The No. 10 ranked team in Class 3A was never challenged in this one, as the tournaments top seed cruised to the win. Scott City opened up a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter, and would go on an 18-2 run over a three-minute stretch to go up 27-9 with 7:32 left before the break. Hutchinson Trinity (1-8) had their lone rally of the night with four straight, only to see the Beavers respond with a 14-3 run over the final 4:29 of the half to lead 41-14 at intermission. A 7-0 run and an 8-0 run by Scott City (8-2) would open up a 38 point lead with three minutes left in the third stanza. Leading 64-26 heading in to the final quarter, the Beavers would see a continuous clock, as most of the subs would help spark a 15-1 run to win 79-27. The 79 points were the most scored by Scott City, since scoring 76 points in 2020 at home against Ulysses.
Jackson Rumford had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Scott City, while Alex Tarango added 15 points. The Beavers went 9-13 at the free throw line and committed 11 turnovers, and dominated the glass 28-16. Hutchinson Trinity was led by Jackson Dozier and Max Ryan, who had seven points apiece. The Celtics had 27 turnovers and were 5-8 from the foul line.
It was the first meeting between the two programs. Scott City has now faced every team in the tournament at least once in their five years in the tournament, as they won their first round game for the third straight season.
