Finney County, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Finney County Sheriff’s office and other emergency crews are still trying to clean up an accident from Wednesday night that caused a semi to leak anhydrous ammonia.

The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 50 just west of Anderson Road. The Kansas Highway Patrol is recommending that those who live in the area remain inside. According to the highway patrol a wind shift this morning has forced the crews working the scene to be back out at this time. Crews will continue working when they can.

Since midnight U.S. 50 westbound has been closed from the Highway 83 junction to Big Lowe Road north of Holcomb. Both lanes were closed between Big Lowe Road and VFW Road.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol the semi was parked with his flashers on at a railroad crossing about two miles west of Garden City. Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday night Janet Pucket, 56, of Ulysses rear-ended the semi after trying an avoidance maneuver. Pucket was pronounced dead at St. Catherine’s Hospital.
