Scott City tennis finishes runner-up at Buhler Regional, baseball against Garden City suspended

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been a busy week, as the Scott City tennis team was in Buhler on Thursday for the Class 4A Regional meet, and baseball was at home against Garden City. Tennis would qualify four and finish second in the regional, while baseball was not able to finish their first game with Garden City, due to lightning in the area.

In Buhler, the Scott City tennis team was second as a team, qualifying four for state. Buhler won the meet with 23 points, while Scott City had 17. The Beavers qualified both singles players in Avry Noll, who placed second, and Houston Frank, who finished fourth. In Doubles, Sage Stoecklein & Ayden Presson were second overall. The other doubles team of Dante Franco & Kade Bonville were one match away from qualifying for state. Friday and Saturday will be the Class 4A State Tennis meet in Topeka.

Baseball was in action for the first time in a week, as they played host to Garden City. The game would be suspended in the top of the ninth with two outs, with the Buffaloes leading 15-13. Garden City jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, before the Beavers battled back to within 5-3 after the opening inning. The Buffs added two more runs in the second and third, before Scott City rallied with five runs in the third, highlighted by a grand slam by Brady Welker on a full count with two outs to give the Beavers an 8-7 lead. The teams would trade runs in the fourth before Garden City took an 11-8 lead in the fifth. In the seventh, the Buffaloes added two insurance runs to go up 13-10, only to see the Beavers rally for three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. In the ninth, Garden City put up two runs, and had a runner on third with two outs when play was halted due to lightning. It is likely the game will not be finished and won’t be rescheduled. Scott City will host Hugoton on Tuesday, and Ulysses on Thursday. The Beavers are currently sitting in the eighth position in the west standings, with Ulysses sittin in ninth.
