What you were wearing sexual assault awareness display at GCCC

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Family Crisis Services is displaying a “What Were You Wearing?” sexual assualt survivor exhibit from April 9-20 at Garden City Community College.

The exhibit is a tangible response to one of our culture’s most pervasive sexual assault myths. The outfits in the display have been re-created from the stories of student survivors.

“It shouldn’t matter what somebody is wearing, nobody asks to be sexually assaulted. A lot of time during court proceedings or police investigations that’s what one of the most common questions, what were you wearing? that’s impertinent because sexual assault or domestic violence is all about power and control,” said Family Crisis Services Sexual Assault Advocate Robin Eaton.

The Family Crisis Services hotline number is 275-5911 and they have a new text line for teens, 640-9050. The hotlines are for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, bullying and other issues.

Family Crisis Services are also hosting support groups for victims. The groups meet the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Meetings are at the office at 106 West Fulton St. Call for more information 275-2018.

The display can be viewed from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. at the Beth Tedrow Student Center Portico until April 20.
