Holcomb opens Bluejay Invitational play with sweep of Meade

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Holcomb Longhorns swept Meade in the first round of the Bluejay Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Cimarron. The Lady Longhorns won 55-34 and boys took a 50-35 victory.

In the girls game, Holcomb got out to an 8-4 lead with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter. Meade would go on a 10-2 run to take a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Dallas Sherman had eight points in the first quarter. Holcomb would play strong defense in the second quarter and get their transition offense rolling early in the quarter. They outscored Meade 14-1 in the quarter to take a 24-15 lead at halftime. The Lady Longhorns continued strong in the third quarter and would have a lead 38-24 going into the fourth. Holcomb went on a 12-0 run to start the final frame and would be up 50-24. They would coast the final six minutes and win 55-34 over Meade.

Meade shot 1-6 from three, 12-39 from inside, and 3-6 from the free throw line. The Lady Buffaloes had 21 rebounds, three of those were offensive boards. They also had 21 turnovers. Meade was led by Dallas Sherman with eight points and five rebounds, and Carlie Martin with nine points. Holcomb shot 6-29 from three, 16-30 from inside, and 6-9 from the free throw line. The Longhorns had 33 rebounds, 10 of which were offensive boards. Holcomb had 15 turnovers. The Longhorns were led by Bella Galliart with four points and eight rebounds, Emily Resendiz with six points and three rebounds, Jera Kruleski with 20 points, and Halle Jones with 21 points, including five made threes, and 10 rebounds for a double double.

Holcomb is now 1-1 and back in action on Friday in round 2 of the Bluejay invitational against South Gray.

The Longhorn Boys started strong working the ball inside and would have a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Holcomb would stretch their lead  to 12 points 27-15 with just over a minute left, but Meade would go on a 5-0 run to close out the half. The Longhorns had a halftime lead 27-20. Meade would get back within two points with 30 seconds left in the third quarter 33-31. Kaden Hardy hit a big three pointer to make it a 36-31 lead going into the fourth quarter. Holcomb would cruise in the fourth quarter and win 50-35 over Meade.

Meade shot 1-8 from three, 13-31 from inside, and 4-5 from the free throw line. The Buffaloes had 12 rebounds, one of those were offensive. They had 12 turnovers. Meade was led by Grayden Stapleton with seven points, and Brock Keith with 16 points. Holcomb shot 3-14 from three point, 15-31 from inside, and 9-13 from the free throw line. The Longhorns had 28 rebounds, eight of those were offensive boards. They had 14 turnovers. Holcomb was led by Kooper Tichenor with eight points and six rebounds, Chris Palacios with nine points and seven rebounds, Kaden Hardy with 12 points and four rebounds, and Drayton Knoll with 13 points and four rebounds.

Holcomb is now 1-1 and back in action on Friday in the second round of the Bluejay Invitational against South Gray.
