Scott City splits with Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City would host their third straight doubleheader on Wednesday, as they played host to the Colby Eagles in GWAC play. It would be a split, as Scott City won the opener 13-3 in five innings, and fell 11-8 in game two.

Scott City 13, Colby 3, Game 1, (5 Inn.)
Colby would lead early in the first game 2-0 after the top of the first, as Mason Kersenbrock would drive in two runs with two outs. However, the Beavers responded in the bottom of the frame on a RBI triple by Brady Welker, and a RBI groundout by Lawson Bailey. The Eagles added a run in the second inning, and when the Beavers batted in the bottom of the second inning, they would put the game away. JP Harris would highlight the inning with a two-run home run, as Scott City put up a 10 spot to lead 12-3 through two innings. The score remained 12-3 until the bottom of the fifth, when Harris hit an RBI triple to close the game out.

Harris struck out eight, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. At the plate, he had three hits and drove in three runs. Spencer Cramer had three hits and Zach Roberts would drive in three runs on two hits. 

Mac Haines took the loss for the Eagles, allowing nine runs on 10 hits. Kersenbrock had two RBI for the Eagles.

Colby 11, Scott City 8, Game 2
Colby never trailed in the second game, as they built up a 4-0 lead through an inning and a half. Landen Vogler’s two out, two-run home run in the top of the first put them on the board early, and they would take advantage of three second inning errors by Scott City. The Beavers also took advantage of three Eagle errors in the bottom half of the inning. The four-run second to tie the game would be capped off by Brady Welker’s two-run blast over the left field fence. Colby went on to score the next four runs of the game, plating a run in the third off an error, and added three more in the fourth. Scott City pulled to within 8-5 in the fifth inning, but saw the Eagles score the next three runs over the sixth and seventh innings to lead 11-5. The Beavers had one final shot, and would score three runs with two outs. They had the tying run at the plate, but a fly out and a diving catch by Colby would snap Scott City’s six-game win streak against the Eagles at 11-8.

Shane Puckett went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts. Braxton Withington would get the save for Colby. Landen Vogler had two hits and three RBI, while Mason Kersonbrock and Brayden Foss had two hit and two RBI for the Eagles. 

Brady Welker took the loss, as he gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings pitched. He also had a two-hit, two-RBI game, while Alex Tarango drove in two runs.

Scott City is 7-1 overall, 3-1 in GWAC play, as they will host Cimarron next Tuesday, April 18. Colby is 5-4 overall, 2-2 in league play, and will host Burlington for one game on Thursday.
