ULYSSES, KS. – Garden City football is used to turf. The Buffaloes’ trip to Ulysses was their first game played on grass since 2012, and just the second in 14th-year head coach Brian Hill’s tenure.

They didn’t look like the team unfamiliar with the field settings.

It was a night to remember for senior Ethen Allen, whose four touchdowns powered the Garden City Buffaloes to a 42-11 win over Ulysses at Maxwell Field. Garden City finishes non-conference play with a 3-1 record, winning each of their last three.

“When you get a running back going, we just wanted to keep feeding him as much as we could,” Hill said. “He got out in the open field and opened it up.”

The game opened up with consistent six play drives for scores for the Buffaloes. Allen scored his first touchdown from seven yards out, followed up by a 10-yard score by Odir Ferman to make it 14-0, Buffaloes.

Ulysses (0-6, 0-3 GWAC) found life on the third GCHS drive. Quarterback Ethan Gomez had the ball taken away, ran back by senior linebacker Carmelo Orosco for a 39-yard touchdown. The Tigers added two as Aden Alvarado passed to Christian Perez in the end zone, making it 14-8.

The game became the Ethen Allen show. Allen would capitalize off a great return by Michael Villalobos for a 35-yard touchdown to mark his first multi-touchdown game in his career.

His final two carries of the first half were simply stunning. A 79-yard touchdown, followed by an 83-yard score gave him 227 rushing yards in the first half alone, and gave Garden City (4-2, 1-1 WAC) a 35-8 lead at the half.

Garden City would add one more touchdown late on, as Gomez found senior Emilio Zundt for a seven-yard score. It was Zundt’s second receiving touchdown on the year, and his first since September 8th against Wichita North.

The passing touchdown was Gomez’ 7th on the campaign. Ulysses would add a late field goal, finishing the scoring at 42-11.

The Buffaloes return home for their final regular season home game next Friday for a pivotal rivalry matchup against Dodge City. Coverage begins from Buffalo Stadium at 6:30 P.M. with the American Implement Pregame Show. The Hatchet Game is scheduled for a 7:00 P.M. kickoff.
