Beavers complete Centennial State sweep with lopsided wins over La Junta

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Saturday wrapped up play in the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, as Scott City played host to the La Junta Tigers in the first-ever matchup between the schools. It would end up being a sweep for the Beavers, as the girls picked up a 73-10 rout, while the boys won 67-28.

Scott City didn’t waste any time putting this game away. The Lady Beavers scored the first 19 points of the game, and led 26-2 after the opening eight minutes. In fact, La Junta didn’t convert a field goal in the first half. A 22-0 run in the second quarter gave Scott City (3-1) a 48-2 halftime lead. The Lady Tigers would hit their first field goal of the game at the 5:40 mark of the third quarter, and scored eight points in the period. In the fourth, Scott City scored all 14 points, and shut out La Junta (0-4) in the final period that had a continuous clock in a 73-10 rout.

Eleven Lady Beavers scored in the game, as Erika Felker scored 11 points, and Piper Fox scored a career-high 10 points. Scott City was 9-14 from the foul line and had 10 turnovers. Raquel Rodriguez led La Junta with four points. They finished with 32 turnovers.

It was the second time in the last three years that Scott City went 3-0 in the Roundball Classic. They are now 17-10 against Colorado schools.

You couldn’t have asked for a better start if you were Scott City. The Beavers jumped out early to a 17-3 lead midway through the first quarter, and never looked back. They led 26-8 after the first quarter, and put up 12 straight to open the second frame, as they led 42-14 at the break. Scott City (4-0) led by as many as 31 in the first half. A 12-2 run pushed their lead to 54-16, as La Junta (1-4) was only able to score in straight possessions once all night. The Beavers led 60-21 after three quarters, and the fourth quarter saw a continuous clock, in a 67-28 win. Scott City led by as many as 43 in the game.

Sage Stoecklein hit his career high in the first half, as he had 17 in the half, and finished wihth 23 points, while Eloy Ruelas had 12 points. Scott City had 11 turnovers and were 5-10 from the line. La Junta got 11 points apiece from Ethan Leyba and Monze Alvidres. They committed 17 turnovers in the contest and hit their lone free throw.

With the win, Scott City not only went 3-0 in the Roundball Classic for the first time since 2014, they are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2014-15 season. They also improved to 16-8 against schools from Colorado.
