Man seriously injured in pedestrian-vehicle accident

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A Garden City man was seriously injured Friday night after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of N. Taylor Avenue and W. Kansas Avenue.

Just before 9:30 pm Friday night, Officers of the Garden City Police Department, Garden City Fire Department, and Finney County EMS were dispatched to the intersection regarding a vehicle hitting a pedestrian. When Officers arrived, they made contact with the pedestrian, identified as 39-year-old Nathaniel Zapata.
 
The investigation revealed Zapata was walking across Taylor Avenue from the McDonald’s parking lot. Zapata did not utilize the pedestrian crosswalk and cut through the middle of the street. A vehicle driven by a 79-year-old Garden City man was traveling south on Taylor Avenue. The driver did not see Zapata as he crossed the street and struck him.
 
Zapata was transported to the hospital and later flown to Wichita due to the extent of his injuries. No other injuries were reported from the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
