Severe weather impacts Garden City

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Severe weather made its impact in the area for the first time in 2024 on Sunday afternoon in Garden City.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City issued a Severe Thunderstom Watch for the area just before 3 pm on Sunday. Less than an hour later, Garden City was hit with a storm. 

At around 3:30 pm,severe weather and high winds began moving across the area. Shortly thereafter, there were reports of damage, power outages and funnel sightings in the Garden City area, which prompted activating tornado sirens in Garden City.

Emergeny personel personnel responded to assess damage reported to residential, commercial, and industrial properties immediately east of US Highway 83, from north of the Arkansas River to approximately Schulman Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders observed damage that was consistent with a tornado or very high winds.
 
No injuries were reported.
 
On Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service reported that a preliminary rating of an EF1 tornado occurred in Garden City Sunday afternoon, which started at 3:30 pm. Winds from the EF1 tornado were approximately 90 MPH.
