Hugoton takes doubleheader sweep over Scott City
Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two GWAC teams met up on Friday night for the first time this year, as Scott City made the trip to Hugoton to face the Eagles. Hugoton would be too much for the Beavers, as the Lady Eagles pulled away for a 50-32 win, while the boys took down Scott City 62-47.

Both teams had their fair share of turnovers throughout. In the end, it was Hugoton that would have the bigger runs of the night. Scott City led briefly before an Eagle 7-0 run, only to see the Lady Beavers tie the game at seven after the opening stanza. Hugoton (8-7 2-2 GWAC) scored the first five points of the second quarter and would take a 19-13 lead at the break. Scott City (5-9, 2-5) scored the first bucket of the second half to get to within four. That was the closest they got the rest of the night. The Lady Eagles scored seven unanswered to lead 31-19 with a little over a minute remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth, Scott City pulled to within 40-30, but a 10-2 Hugoton run closed the game out in the final 2:23 of the contest, as the Lady Eagles prevailed 50-32.
Amiley Lewis led the way for Hugoton wiht 15 points, while Natalie Villegas added 10. The Lady Eagles went 15-22 from the foul stripe and had 21 turnovers. Scott City got 16 from Peyton Gentry and 10 points and 14 rebounds from Piper Fox, as the Lady Beavers were 5-10 from the free throw line and committed 31 turnovers.
The win by Hugoton snapped a five-game losing streak to the Lady Beavers, and was their first win at home against Scott City since 2022. Hugoton leads the series since 1989 30-17.

For the first time all season, Scott City had an adjustment to the starting lineup. Brody Stoecklein was out due to an injury suffered late in the Colby game on Thursday. It would be a slow start for the Beavers, and the complete opposite for the Egles. Hugoton (11-4, 3-1 GWAC) raced out to an 12-1 lead in the first seven minutes. It would take Scott City over seven minutes to record their first field goal, as they were able to patch together the final five points of the quarter to pull to within 12-6 after the first eight minutes of play. The Eagles never trailed, but the Beavers were able to slowly chip away at the lead in the second quarter. Scott City (8-6, 4-3) pulled to within 22-21 with 2:02 left in the first half, before Hugoton responded over the next five minutes with a 15-3 run and led 37-24 with 3:08 remaining in the third frame. They extended their lead to 44-29 after three quarters. The Eagles were able to lead by as many as 18 points midway through the fourth quarter, and cruised to the 62-47 win.
Cameron Rosas led the way with 21 poitns, while Jonas Mauk added 14 for Hugoton, who shot 16-27 from the free throw line and finished with 11 turnovers. Scott City was led by Avery Radke’s 16 poitns, Cooper Irvin had 11 and Junior Meza added 10. The Beavers went just 5-11 from the foul line and finished with 11 turnovers.
With the win, Hugoton has won seven of hte last 10 in the series and now lead the series since 1989 25-21. The loss snapped Scott City’s three-game win streak.
