Colby girls, Scott City boys take home GWAC Tournament titles

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday saw the seven Great West Activities Conference schools venture to Ulysses for the annual GWAC wrestling tournament. The schools and participants were looking for momentum in their final tournaments before postseason. A pair of familiar teams would take the tournament titles in the Colby girls and Scott City boys.

For the girls tourmanent, Colby would win their third consecutive GWAC title, while Ulysses was second with their highest finish in the girls tournament’s four-year history. The Lady Tigers were led by Jeymi Rosales at 125 and Britnee Hittle at 140 winning their weight classes. Scott City was third with three tournament champions, as Audrey Escalona at 105, Haylie McDaniel at 110 and Amya Parker at 120, took hoome brackets. Holcomb was fourth, as Amayah Caro at 145 and Alexis White won the 155-pound weight division. Cimarron was sixth, with Peyton Smith winning at 235, and Hugoton was seventh. Colby’s Morgan Hills was named the GWAC Wrestler of the Year, winning the 135-pound weight class.

In the boys tournament, Scott City would reclaim the top spot, as they have won the league tournament title for the eigth time in the last nine seasons. The Beavers had three tournament champions, with Matthew Wheeler winning 150, Blaze Gossman taking 165, and Max Depperschmidt winning at 235. Hugoton’s second place finish was their highest since 2012. The Eagles saw Cooper Nix win at 144, Von Grubbs take the 175-pound weight class, and Uvaldo Martinez winning at 215. Ulysses was third, with Maddox Delgado winning the 126-pound weight class. Cimarron was fifth, as Reed Moore won the title at 106. Holcomb was sixth with Angelo Otero winning the title at 120 and Javid Corral winning the title at 157. Scott City’s Matthew Wheeler wa named the GWAC Wrestler of the Year, after his last second takedown won him the title at 150.

The girls will compete at the super regional tourmaents next Friday and Saturday. Cimarron will be at the 321A Super Regional at WaKeeney, while Colby, Goodland, Holcomb, Hugoton, Scott City and Ulysses will be at the Class 4A Augusta Super Regional the same days. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for state. As for the boys, they will wait until Saturday, February 21 for their regional competition. Cimarron will be at the Class 321A Norton Regional, Colby, Goodland and Scott City will be at the 4A Beloit regional, and Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses will be at the Clas 4A Regional in Winfield.
