Local Fifth-grader, Coen Main, Wins Arbor Day Poster Contest
St. Dominic Catholic School played host to the City of Garden City’s Arbor Day event on Monday, April 27, 2026. Fifth-grader, Coen Main, from the school, was recognized for designing the best poster in the school and city in the annual Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest.
Sophia Esparza, a fifth-grader at St. Mary Catholic School, received second place in the city, and Aidria Varela, a fifth-grader at Plymell Elementary School, took third place in the contest.
Arbor Day is a holiday on the last Friday of April in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Garden City is celebrating its 48th year as being a Tree City USA community.
Personnel from the Garden City Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Kansas Forest Service demonstrated how to properly plant a tree at the school. The poster winners helped to plant the tree during the event.
Deb Oyler, Vice-Mayor of Garden City, read a proclamation that detailed the importance of trees to Garden City and named April 24, 2026, as Arbor Day in Garden City.
