Holcomb outlasts Lady Beavers to advance to sub-state final
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was the third time the two GWAC foes met up, this time for a sub-state finals berth on Saturday afternoon, as Scott City hit the road to face Holcomb. The Lady Longhorns won the first two games of the season. Once again, they would prove to be too much as they advanced to the sub-state finals with a 45-36 win at Holcomb High School.
The Lady Beavers got off to its best start in the series, as there would be four ties and five lead changes. Scott City scored the final seven points of the first quarter to take a 15-10 lead in to the second quarter. A five minute scoring drought would plague the Lady Beavers to open the second quarter, and Holcomb (17-5) would make them pay. A 14-4 run over the first six minutes gave the Lady Longhorns a 24-17 lead with 2:09 left before halftime. Scott City (13-9) rallied to pull to within two, but Holcomb would find a way to take a 29-24 hafltime lead. Scoring would be at a minimum in the third quarter, as the Lady Longhorns outscored the Lady Beavers 9-7 in the third stanza to lead 38-31 going into the fourth quarter. It took a little over three minutes, but Scott City would score first, and pulled to within 38-36 wiht 3:43 left. Holcomb would slow the pace down, and score their first field goal of the final period with 2:14 left and proceeded to score the final five points of the game to take a 45-36 win.
Halle Jones led the way with 20 points for Holcomb and Bella Galliard added 10. The Lady Longhorns went 7-12 from the charity line and had 12 turnovers. Scott City got 12 points from Piper Fox and 10 from Avery Lewis. The Lady Beavers went 3-4 at the foul line, all in the first half, and finished with 15 turnovers.
Holcomb matches their win total from last year, and advances to their second straight sub-state championship game with the win. The Lady Longhorns have won nine straight in the series and lead 39-27. They are now 2-1 in the postseason against Scott City, and won their first postseason game against the Lady Beavers since 2011. Scott City improved by two wins from last year, and saw a three-game winning streak snapped.

Holcomb will face Beloit, who dominated the fourth quarter in a 67-49 win over Southwestern Heights on Thursday. Colby and Goodland will meet up for the fourth time this year, after the Lady Eagles doubled up Russell 50-25, and the Cowgirls rallied for a 45-26 win at Ellsworth. Colby has won the previous three meetings.
