Beavers and Longhorns split doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the regular season is quickly approaching, two GWAC rivals met up on Tuesday night, as Scott City played host to Holcomb in a doubleheader that saw both schools looking to move up in the GWAC and regional standings. On Winter Homecoming night, it was a doubleheader split, as the Lady Longhorns never trailed in a 44-36 win, while the Beaver boys pulled away late for a 59-48 victory.
Holcomb Girls 44, Scott City 36
The way Holcomb started felt like groundhog day for the Lady Beavers. For the first quarter, the Lady Longhorns opened up with four first quarter triples, and five in the first half, as they took a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. After Scott City put up the first two points of the second quarter, Holcomb (12-3, 6-1 GWAC) scored the next 11 points to take a 23-8 lead with 3:20 left before the break. The offense would finally wake up for the Lady Beavers, as they went on an 8-0 run to pull to within seven, before trailing 25-16 at the break. Scott City (8-7, 3-5) would pull to within 28-27 with 1:16 left in the third quarter, before the Lady Longhorns responded with 10 straight to lead 38-27 with 5:21 left. The Lady Beavers pulled to within 40-36 with 1:45 remaining, but Holcomb would score the final four points to take a 44-36 win.
Halle Jones led Holcomb with 16 points, while Bella Galliart added 15. The Lady Longhorns had 11 turnovers and finished 6-12 from the free throw line. Scott City saw Piper Fox pour in a career-high 16 points, as Scott City went 3-7 at the charity line and had 22 turnovers.
Holcomb has now won eight straight in the series, and now hold a 38-27 lead in the all-time series. It’s also their fifth straight win in Scott City.

For the first 27 minutes, the game saw a lead no bigger than five points either side. That would change in the final 4:53 of the game. The game also saw four ties and five lead changes. Holcomb came out early to lead 13-9 in the first quarter. To open the second quarter, Scott City (11-4, 4-4 GWAC) scored the first eight points ot lead 17-13 with 4:46 left before halftime. The Longhorns trailed 24-20 with under two minutes left in the opening half, and closed with seven straight points to take a 27-24 halftime lead. Trailing 32-29 early in the second half, the Beavers scored eight in a row to lead 37-32 with 4:26 left in the third stanza. Holcomb (11-4, 5-2) scored five straight to tie the game with 2:43 left in the third quarter at 37. Scott City responded with four straight, and would take a 41-37 lead into the fourth period. The Longhorns scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to pull to within two. Over the next 3:39, the Beavers, used a 10-2 run to take a 51-41 lead at the three minute mark of the game. They would lead by 12 with 1:04 left at 57-45, before picking up a 59-48 win.
Jackson Rumford poured in 25 points to lead Scott City, while Junior Meza scored a career-high 17 points. The Beavers went 13-17 from the free throw line and had just seven turnovers. Holcomb saw Brody Deniston lead the way with 17 points, and got 11 points from Kaeden Hardy, as the Longhorns went 8-11 from the foul line and had 16 turnovers.
Scott City now leads the all-time series 35-33, and picked up their first regular season sweep of Holcomb since 2020. The Beavers clinched a winning record for the first time since 2019 with the win.
