Broncbuster basketball teams swept at Barton

Great Bend, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Garden City Broncbuster basketball teams were on the second of their four-game road swing on Saturday afternoon, as they were at Barton to face the Cougars in Jayhawk Conference play. It would be a tough day for both teams, as the Lady Cougars 64-41, while the Barton men would pull away late in a 98-85 win.

Barton Women 64, Garden City 41
The first and third quarters were tough starts for the Lady Busters, as slow starts to begin the first and second half’s would come back to haunt them. It would take over five minutes for Garden City to score, but they were never out of the game. They trailed 13-6 after the first quarter, and by 11 at 17-6 early in the second quarter, before they were able to slowly chip away at the deficit, pulling to within 24-19 with under two minutes remaining in the half. After that, it was all Barton (9-11, 5-9 Jayhawk Conference). The Lady Cougars scored the final four points of the half to go up nine, and over an 11-minute stretch, would go on a 27-4 run to lead 51-23 going in to the final period. Barton’s biggest lead was 53-24 and 61-32. Garden City (9-10, 6-8) would close the final 3:44 of the game on a 9-3 run to make the final 64-41.

Barton had four players in double figures, led by Vivian Onugha’s 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Regina Donanu had 12, Alaina Eck had 11 and Brittany Simpson added 10. The Lady Cougars shot 51% from the field, and were 8-10 from the line. They outrebounded Garden City 36-23. Jolie Mantz led the Lady Busters with 10 points, all in the first half. They shot 30% for the game and 7-9 at the foul line. Garden City committed 24 turnovers.

Garden City has lost three straight games, and have fallen below .500 for the first time this year. Barton now leads the series 69-27.

Barton Men 98, Garden City 85
For the first 37 minutes, the game was as competitive as it could be. There were 13 ties and 13 lead changes. Garden City would lead the most of the game, as they were able to build a 27-17 lead with 7:41 left in the first half, on the heels of a 13-4 run. Barton (16-4, 10-4 Jayhawk Conference) rallied with a 12-2 run to tie the game at 29 at the four-minute mark of the opening half. The rest of the half went back and forth, as the Busters would end up trailing 44-42 at the break. In the second half, Garden City (11-9, 6-8) jumped out early on and led 56-52 with 14:17 left. The lead would go back and forth throughout the next 10-plus minutes with several ties. It would be tied at 79 with 4:11 left, when the Cougars would come back down the court and hit an open three to go up 82-79 with 3:40 remaining. That three would spark an 18-2 run over the next three minutes, as Barton opened up a 98-79 lead with 32 seconds left. The Broncubsters scored the final four points, and fell 98-85.

Keandre Kindell led Barton with a career-high 31 points, while Brent Moss added 25 poitns, and James Parlow, Jr and Eltramon Smith, Jr. came off the bench and scored 13 points apiece. The Cougars shot 57% for the game, and went 22-28 at the free throw line and had just seven turnovers. They would score 29 points off of 15 Garden City turnovers. Leading the Busters was Antonio Chol with 20 points, while Emmanuel Manyuon added 18 points, Josiah Sabino had 17 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out late, Caleb Smith had 12 points and Desean Lewis added 10. The Bronbusters shot 52% from the floor and were 19-25 from the foul line. The would outrebound the Cougars 31-28, and had 19 second chance points.

Garden City’s four-game win streak was snapped, and Barton now leads the all-time series 78-38.

Up next for Garden City is a trip to Goodland to face the Fort Hays Tech Northwest Tigers on Wednesday night.
