Cimarron girls, Holcomb boys take home GWAC track titles

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It would be a record-breaking type of day on Thursday at the Great West Activities Conference Track & Field meet, held in Goodland. In total, 10 records would be broken, with seven coming on the boys side.

Cimarron girls would have a strong showing on the track to win their first-ever GWAC track title, while the Holcomb boys would take their third consecutive league track title.

On the girls side, the Lady Bluejays would rally on the track for the win, led by Janae Fugitt and Jyntri Wilson, who took the top two places in the 800, 1600 and 3200 Meter runs, and were part of the winning 4x800M relay. Holcomb’s Madyson Schreibvogel broke the meet record in the 200 and 400 Meter dashes. Ulysses would take the top three places in the 100M dash, and break the league meet record in the 4x100M relay.

For the boys, Holcomb would take the league title, thanks to a strong showing from Brody Deniston in the 800 and 1600 Meter runs, and Jeb Stoppel in the 3200M run, as well as the teams 4x800M Relay win. Scott City’s Camden Vulgamore picked up wins in the pole vault, 400M run, and was the anchor in the record-breaking 4x400M relay, which also broke a 25-year-old school record. Ulysses got a strong showing from sophomore Gaige McGaughey, who helped break three league meet records in the 100 and 200 Meter dashes, along with the 4x100M relay.

Cimarron’s Janae Fugitt was name GWAC Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year, while Goodland’s Linkon Cure was the GWAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
