GCHS Baseball wrangles Goodland, looks to midseason

Garden City, KS (Western Kansas News) – GCHS baseball secured the sweep of the Goodland Cowboys on Monday, with scores of 7-6 and 12-2. The Buffs had originally been scheduled to play earlier in the month against Goodland, but poor weather resulted in the postponement of the games to this last Monday.
Both games saw GCHS acquire leads early, the first bout requiring a white-knuckle treatment from the varsity squad as Goodland battled back furiously in later innings. The second game was all Garden City, however, and improved the season to 4-6 for the Bat Buffs.
Bo Roth, Drew Strecker, Kyler Metzen, Eli Steinmetz, and Jakobe Rathbun all saw pitching duties throughout the double header, with Steinmetz making a varsity appearance after being brought up from the JV squad, a la minor leaguers making their big-league debuts.
The Buffs, who acquired their first WAC wins of the Anthony Ortiz era last week against Liberal, splitting a double header with the Redskins, are looking to continue to build off their momentum and stack good days on good days. The 2024 GCHS Varsity Baseball team went winless in WAC play, and it was a significant goal of Coach Ortiz to break through and begin making waves in league play. With the first of many significant psychological hurdles from last season jumped over by the 2025 team, GCHS intends to keep winning.
