GCHS Win Substate Openers

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Both Garden City basketball teams advanced to the Substate finals with wins over Wichita Northwest.  The girls struggled early trailing 8-0 until going on a 18-0 run and never looked back in a 66-40 win.  Senior Taryn Tempel scored 22 points for the Lady Buffaloes leading three players in double figures.  Garden City improves to 13-8 and will play second seed Maize (17-4) on their home floor Friday at 7pm.

The Garden City boys withstood a fierce charge from a 5-15 Wichita Northwest team to beat the Grizzlies 46-43.  Hunter Delgado hit a 40 footer at the buzzer to end the first half, but Garden City could not keep the momentum going.  Grizzlies guard Caleb Cobb missed two three point attempts in the game’s final seconds that would have tied the game.  Tristan Nanninga led Garden City scoring 11 points.  After the game head coach Jacy Holloway was pleased with his team’s defensive effort.

Garden City (13-8) will host either Wichita North or Wichita South Saturday night at 7pm for the substate championship.
