Holcomb boys, Beloit girls win 3A regional titles

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In perhaps the toughest regional in Class 3A, 16 teams made up of this year’s 3A regional held at Darner Field in Scott City on Thursday. The schools would take advantage of great weather, as temperatures in the upper 70’s with a breeze helped produce some good results.

The Holcomb boys would fend off Lakin for the regional title, while Scott City was third. The Longhorns rallied for the win, thanks in part to a solid performance for Brody Deniston, who won the 800M Run, and was part of the winning 4x800M Relay team. Lakin saw Austin Ritsema win the 1600 and 3200M Runs, to go along with High Jump. Scott City’s Camden Vulgamore took the 200 and 400M Dash races, and was the anchor on the winning 4x400M Relay team.

On the girls side, Beloit dominated the meet, thanks in large part to their field events. Cimarron and Lakin would tie for second place. The Bronc’s Aryn Michaelis would take titles in the High Jump and Triple Jump. Cimarron’s Janae Fugitt won the 3200M run.

Qualifying for state has changed this year, as the top three finishers automatically qualify for state, and the top four best marks from the four regionals qualify for state.

The State Track & Field Championships will be held at Cessna Stadium in Wichita on Friday & Saturday, May 30 & 31.
