Holcomb boys, Goodland girls, claim GWAC track titles

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a day that started out hot, ended up being a nice evening for track. The 2026 GWAC meet at Cimarron would also see a weather delay during the event, but the delay would be worth it. Overall, 10 meet records were broken, with five boys and five girls records broken. Holcomb’s boys and Goodland’s girls would come out on top in the end of the day in the team title race.

Starting with the boys, Holcomb claimed their fourth consecutive league title, while Ulysses was second and Hugoton was third in a deep field. The Longhorns were led by Brody Deniston’s wins in the 800 and 1600, as he became a four-time GWAC champion in each event. Cooper Cranston swept the hurdle races, and won the Javelin. He broke the meet record in the 300M Hurdles and in the Javelin. Ulysses was second, led by their run in the 4x100M Relay, and a win in the 200M Dash by Gaige McGaughey.

The girls race came down to the final event between Goodland and Scott City. Heading in to the final race, the Lady Beavers held a one-point lead. The Cowgirls would rally in the 4x400M Relay to come back and overtake Scott City for the league title for their third GWAC crown in the last four years. Colby was third. Scott City was led by Kinleigh Wren, who won the 400M Dash, and was part of the school-record breaking 4x100M Relay. Aja Ysac broke three meet records, winning the 100M and 200M Dashes and was the anchor of the 4x100M Relay. She also broke the school record in the 200M Dash she set last Friday at Lakin and also in the 4x100M Relay.

Holcomb’s Brody Deniston was named the GWAC Track Boys Athlete of the Year, while Scott City’s Kinleigh Wren was the GWAC Track Girls Athlete of the Year.

Colby, Goodland and Scott City will be at the Class 3A Regional in Beloit on Thursday, while Cimarron and Holcomb are headed to the 3A Regional in Cheney on Friday, May 22. Hugoton and Ulysses will be at the Class 4A Regional in Andale on Friday, May 22.
