Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a warm and windy day Friday, two GWAC teams took the field in Holcomb. The Longhons would sweep the Beavers 12-7 and 5-4 in walk-off fashion.

Holcomb took advantage of five Beaver errors in the first game. After Scott City took the early 1-0 lead after a half inning, the Longhorns scored four runs, and never looked back. Holcomb would tack on three more in the second, before the Beavers made a comeback attempt. Scott City responded with two in the third to pull to within 7-3, and would get to within 10-6 in the top of the fifth inning. The Longhorns tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning, and took game one. Calen Rupp drove in two runs and had three RBI for Holcomb, and Conner Van Cleave helped out his cause on the hill by driving in three runs. Van Cleave went all seven innings, giving up seven runs, three earned on nine hits and struck out 10 to pick up the win. Scott City’s Sloan Baker had a three-hit game, while Reid Flower and Keigun Wells drove in two runs. Wells took the loss, going all six innings, giving up 12 runs, five earned, on 11 hits.

Game two of the evening was much tighter, as Scott City took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, only to see Holcomb score three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead after two innings. The Beavers had their chances to win the game, leaving the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, scoring only one run in those two innings. They tied the Longhorns at three in the fourth, only to see Holcomb score a run to push ahead again. In their last at bat, Scott City tied the game in the seventh, on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Aguilera, scoring Gustavo Gonzales from third base. The Longhorns would win with two outs. Tanner Mongeau hit a shot into right field, scoring Conner Van Cleave from second to complete the sweep of the Beavers and win 5-4. Scott City saw Aguilera drive in two runs, all sacrifice hits, and collected six hits. Mongeau and Calen Rupp each had a pair of hits for Holcomb. Despite blowing a save opportunity, Colby Casaus picked up the win for the Longhorns, giving up one run on two hits in an inning and a third, while Sloan Baker took the loss for Scott City, as he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, two earned on nine hits, and struck out nine.

Scott City is now 0-6 on the season, and 0-2 in the Great West Activities Conference. They’ll play at Liberal on Tuesday. Holcomb improves to 4-2 on the year, 2-2 in GWAC play, and will visit Ulysses Tuesday.
