Man From Garden City Receives 10 Years in Second Degree Murder Case

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)  A man from Garden City who pled down to a second degree murder charge despite objections of the victims family, received a 10 year prison sentence Friday.  34 year old Fred Schmidt was going to trial for the 2011 killing of 24 year old Jeffrey Nichols before he entered into the plea deal. Forenics evidences indicates that Nichols was stabbed 45 times.

Both Nichols mother and father spoke before the courtroom and continued their assertion that Schmidt be tried on the 1st degree charge in the murder of their son and that prosecutors entered into the plea deal without their approval.  Judge Robert Frederick says Schmidt will be give credit for time already served which amounts to a little more than a year.
