Scott City baseball drops regional opener

Colby, Kan. (westernkasnasnews.com)–For the first inning and a half, it was all Scott City. For the rest of the day, it was all Colby. Unfortunately for the Beavers, they were unable to end the momentum for the Eagles, as their season would come to a halt in a 13-8 loss at Young Memorial Field in the Class 3A Regional quarterfinals.

Scott City would jump out early to a 2-0 first inning lead, thanks to a RBI triple by Eloy Ruelas that scored Avery Radke. They added five more in the second inning, as they would bat 11 in the second inning, and plate five runs, capped off by Spencer Cramer’s two-run single to push the lead to 7-0.

After the top of the second, it was all Colby.

The Beavers would be retired 13 consecutive times from the final out of the second inning to the final out of the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the second frame, the Eagles rallied for six runs that saw Brayden Foss drive in two runs, and Colby would pull to within 7-6. Foss would ground out in the bottom of the third to give the Eagles an 8-7 lead and they would never look back, as they ended up scoring three runs in the third, a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go up 13-7.

In the seventh, Scott City would tack on one more run to make the final 13-8.

Colby would collect 16 hits in the game, as Braxton Withington had three hits and Talon Andreason had tree runs and drove in two runs. Brayden Foss and Cobin Curry each had two RBI. Max Kersenbrock gave up seven runs, six earned, on five hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Withing got the win, giving up an earned run on three hits with eigth strikeouts. Spencer Cramer had two hits and had four RBI for Scott City, and Eloy Ruelas would collect three hits. He started the game for the Beavers, and took the loss, giving up 2 2/3 innings, giving up nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits with four walks. Eeaston Eisenhour gave up three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, and Spencer Cramer struck out two, and gave up a run on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Scott City ends the season at 12-11, while Colby improves to 16-5. On Tuesday, Colby will take on the third seed Lakin Broncs, who won on a walkoff 14-13 over Southwestern Heights. Top seed Holcomb shut out Goodland 2-0, and will take on fifth seed Russell, who defeated Cimarron 8-2. All games will be played in Colby.
