Scott City Blows by Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Despite having three turnovers in as many possessions, the Scott City Beaver Football team did what they needed to do, and dismantled the Cimarron Bluejays 55-6 Tuesday night at Darner Field in Scott City in the Class 3A Bi-District round.

Scott City scored on their opening drive on an 18-yard pass play from Brett O’Neil to Devyn Eggleston with 8:35 to go in the first quarter, that capped off a 59-yard drive on eight plays. Brett O’Neil booted in the extra point to make it 7-0 Beavers. On their second possession, Dalton Buehler ran for an 85-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive with 6:16 remaining in the opening quarter. O’Neil’s point-after attempt made it 14-0 Scott City, which would be the score after the first 12 minutes.

The Beavers would turn the ball over on three consecutive drives. Two of the turnovers were on fumbles, one near the goal line and the third was an interception. After Scott City settled down, their offense got going again. With 6:54 left before halftime, Buehler would find paydirt. This time, from 75 yards away, and took the Beavers would take a 21-0 lead after the O’Neil extra point. Cimarron would answer back on their lone scoring drive on the night late in the first half. With 32 seconds remaining, AJ Cooper found Christian Fisher on a four-yard pass, that capped off a drive aided by a roughing the kicker call against the Beavers. The Bluejays missed the extra point to make it 21-6, but the scoring wasn’t done for the half. Scott City drove 69 yards for their fourth score of the night. On an untimed down due to a pass interference called on the Bluejays, O’Neil found Eggleston for the second time tonight, off of the finger tips of Drew Kite to make it 27-6 at recess.

Scott City marched down the field on their opening drive in the second half, capped off by a three-yard plunge by Dalton Buehler with 9:29 remaining in the third quarter. Brett O’Neil’s extra point made it 34-6. On the next Beaver drive, Tius Price would find the end zone from 36 yards out with 5:59 to go in the third stanza, and an O’Neil PAT made it 41-6. It was 48-6 with 4:53 left in the third on a 20-yard interception by Drew Kite.

The Beavers would score one more time in the fourth quarter with the second team in, as Paco Banda punched it in from one yard out, and Brenner Wells booted in the extra point to make it 55-6.

For the game, Brett O’Neil finished with 194 yards unofficially through the air, with two touchdown passes to Devyn Eggleston and one interception. That was his first interception of the season, and the first since the Ulysses game in Week 6 of the 2011 season. Dalton Buehler finished with 241 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns. Cimarron only had one rusher in positive yards. Eduard0 Trevino had one carry for three yards. AJ Cooper passed for 161 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

Scott City (10-0) will play at Sacred Heart Saturday in Salina. The Knights are 9-1, and held off Norton 21-19 in Salina. Cimarron ends their season at 7-3.
