Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two top-five teams in Class 4A, Division II hit the court Monday at Scott Community High School in a make up game from last Tuesday, as Hugoton ventured to Scott City to face the Beavers. Just like their games on January 10 in Hugoton, the ranked teams prevailed once again. The Lady Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 4A, Division II, ran away in the second quarter, on their way to a 68-33 win over the Lady Beavers, while the No. 1 team in 4A, Division II Scott City cruised to a 71-51 win.

Hugoton jumped out early on the Lady Beavers and never looked back, scoring nine of the games first 10 points in the first two and a half minutes. After Scott City pulled to within five midway through the first quarter, the Lady Eagles scored the next 13 points of the game. When it looked like they would run away for good, the Lady Beavers made a push late in the first half, getting to within 32-19. An 8-1 run in the final 90 seconds of the half propeled Hugoton to the 40-20 hafltime lead. It continued there for the Lady Eagles, as they used a 21-4 third quarter run to force the running clock. Hugoton (13-2, 6-1 GWAC) led by as many as 40 in the game, before it ended up being a 35-point final at 68-33. Three Lady Eagles were in double figures, led by Melissa Fabela with 19, Amy Scott with 18 and Katy Heger with 15. Scott City (2-12, 0-6) got a team-high 17 from Kelly Wycoff.

The boys game saw Scott City take care of business early on. Hugoton committed 12 first quarter fouls, and the Beavers took advantage at the foul line by going 13-of-15 in the opening eight minutes on their free throws, and led 19-6 after one. In the second, Scott City rattled off 10 straight to build their biggest lead of the game to 23 at 29-6. The closest the Eagles would get the rest of the way was 15. It was 38-20 Beavers at the break, and stretched it out to 58-37 heading into the final quarter. Behind good foul shooting and balanced scoring, Scott City (13-1, 6-0 GWAC) was able to keep a physical Eagle team out of sync on defense all night. It was the fourth time the Beavers put up 70 points in a game this season, as they swept the regular season series with the Eagles for the fourth straight year. Scott City got a career-high 19 points from Chris Pounds, while Trey O’Neil added 15, Brett Meyer 14 and Sloan Baker 12 for the Beavers, who clinched the top seed in the Goodland Sub-State with the win. Hugoton (7-8, 3-4) got 15 points from Jeison Rodriguez.

Up next for Scott City will be a road trip to Goodland Tuesday night, at TMP-Marian on Friday and a home doubleheader with Great Bend on Saturday. Friday’s games will be played at Hays High School. Hugoton hosts the Guymon Tigers on Friday.
