Scott City swept in Colby

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final games before midseason tournament play next week, Scott City and Colby would face off in GWAC play. Both games would come down to the wire, but the Eagles would sweep both games, as the Colby girls would take a 48-42 victory, while the Eagle boys won 51-47.

The Lady Beavers gave the No. 6 team in Class 3A a good run, but the Lady Eagles would have a couple more runs that would be the difference. There were two ties in the game, but after that, Colby (9-1, 6-0 GWAC) would never trail. A 5-0 run late in the first quarter pushed the Lady Eagles otu ot a 9-4 lead. They led by eight at 21-13 with 3:46 left before the break, before Scott City (4-5, 2-3) pulled to with 21-17, and trailed 23-19 at tthe break. The defining moment in the game might have come in the third quarter, when Colby started out on an 8-2 run and led 31-23 midway through the period. For the rest of the night, the Lady Eagles would hold the Lady Beavers at arms length, and built a 12 point lead early in the fourth period at 37-25. Scott City could get no closer than six the rest of the night, as they fell 48-42.
Colby was led by Alisabeth Barton’s 21 points, as the Lady Eagles went 13-18 from the free throw line. They committed 10 turnovers. Scott City got a career-high 16 points from Avery Lewis, as they were 10-12 at the foul line and had 12 turnovers.
With the win, Colby has now won seven straight, and have a 62-18 advantage in the series since 1980.

While Colby led most of the night, the game would come down to the final seconds. The Eagles jumped early 6-0, before the Beavers tied the game up at 6 late in the first quarer. In the second period, the teams would exchange leads four times, before Colby (7-3, 4-2 GWAC) would take a 21-17 lead at the break. To begin the second half, Scott City (7-2, 3-2) tied the game at 21, before the Eagles scored six straight to lead 27-21 with 3:21 left in the third quarter. Colby led 32-27 heading into the final frame, as the Beavers rallied to pull to wihtin one with 6:32 left. Colby would separate themselves with a 6-0 run and grew their lead to 46-38 with 1:30 left. Scott City hit just one three through the first three quarters, and found a way to hit three of their four, fourth quarter triples to pull to within 48-47 with 9.4 seconds left. Colby would hit one of two free throws, but the Beavers turned it over. The Eagles would sink a pair of free throws with 6.4 seconds left to make the final 51-47.
Jordan Jones had 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead Colby, while Guy Tubbs had 14 poitns and Brayden Foss had 12. The Eagles were 8-13 at the free throw line and had 11 turnovers. Scott City got 20 points from Jackson Rumford and a season-high 13 from Eloy Ruelas. They didn’t attempt a free throw and had 12 turnovers.
With the win, Colby has won two straight, and hold a 45-36 lead since 1980.
