Shook defends The Dunes, GCHS takes second at home invitational

Garden City, Kan. (Western Kansas News) – It was an excellent day for some golf Thursday as Garden City High School’s boys golf team captured second behind Dodge City, and reigning 6A state champion Maddix Shook captured the individual title at the GCHS Invitational at Buffalo Dunes.
The boys’ team shot a season low 321, six strokes off of Dodge City’s winning 315, and senior Maddix Shook dominated with a 67 (32-35) across 18 holes. The WAC teams and visiting Valley Center played the front nine of The Dunes twice, utilizing two different sets of tee boxes. The back nine of Buffalo Dunes remains under construction, while the newly renovated front nine features a handful of new greens and fairway changeups that prove challenging for even the seasoned golfers at the course.
GCHS finishes their season during the month of May at Lake Barton Golf Course in Great Bend on May 5th and wrap up their WAC schedule in Liberal at Willow Tree Golf Course. The Class 6A regional tournament will be held in Dodge City at Mariah Hills Golf Course on May 19, while the state championship tournament is to be held in Winfield at Quail Ridge Golf Course on May 27-28. GCHS’s Maddix Shook, as the reigning 6A individual state champion, is an anticipated favorite for the post season.
