Wray boys, Larned girls win tournament titles at Scott City Classic

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the largest field of the 40th Annual Scott City Wrestling Classic, 23 boys teams and 16 girls teams would compete in Scott City that saw good wrestling on Saturday. This years team champions would belong to newcomers of the tournament, As Wray would take the boys team title, while the Larned girls would win the girls title.

On the boys side, the Wray Eagles won by 27.5 points over Scott City, while Ulysses would take home third place. The Beavers would get two champions, as Trenton Frank won at 126, while Matthew Wheeler was the champion at 150. Ulysses saw Jaxsen Salinas win the 144-pound weight class. Hugoton got a tournament champion with Isaiah Peachey at 113 pounds. The fastest fall belonged to Wray’s Coleson Waitman, who had a 13-second fall. Austin Collins of Wray was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, as he won the 138-pound weight class.

For the girls, it would come down to the final match for the team title between Larned and Lamar. Larned would win the 190-pound weight class, and won by one point over Lamar. Scott City was third. There would be several area champions. Scott City saw Ashlyn Rose win at 155 pounds, while Jentri Porter from Wichita County won at 105, Luna Vazquez of Lakin was the winner at 110 pounds, and Holcomb got two winners, with Jalyssa Lopez winning at 115 and Abigail Redden winning at 235 pounds. Scott City’s Audrey Escalona had the fastest fall, winning by a fall in 20 seconds. Stafford’s Trynity Pope was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, winning at 170 pounds.
