Scott City falls in a pair of nailbiters
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was Senior Night for Scott City on Tuesday night, as the Beavers played host to the Colby Eagles in a GWAC doubleheader. In the end, it would be a sweep for the Eagles in a pair of tight contests, as the Colby girls won 48-47, while the Eagle boys picked up a 56-52 win.

In a game that went back and forth down the stretch, it would be the Lady Eagles who would come out with the win. The lead would be exchanged six times and be tied seven times. Scott City would jump out to a 15-10 lead after the opening frame, and had a 17-10 lead early in the second period. After Colby pulled to within 17-12 early in the second quarter, a 9-2 run by the Lady Beavers gave them a 26-14 lead with 2:09 left before the break. The Lady Eagles responded with seven of the final 10 points of the half to make it a 29-21 halftime score. It would be the three-pointer that would help Colby (13-6, 3-2 GWAC) rally back in the third quarter. A 12-2 run tied the game at 34 with 46.9 left in the third frame. Scott City led 38-36 heading into the fourth quarter. Over the final period, the teams would exchange points for points throughout. The Lady Beavers took a 47-46 lead with 1:51 left. The teams would trade empty possessions down the stretch. With 10 seconds left, Colby’s Alisabeth Barton would hit the go-ahead layup to put the Lady Eagles up 48-47. Scott City (8-11, 1-4) had a chance to reclaim the lead, but turned the ball over. Colby missed a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds left, and the Lady Beavers would rebound, but would not be able to put up a shot through contact in the back court, as the Lady Eagles would win 48-47.
Alisabeth Barton led Colby with 17 points, while Logan Nolan added 16. Scott City was led by Erika Felker with 12 and Brooke Strine had 11.
With the win, the Lady Eagles have now won three straight, and five of the last six in the series, and since 1980, they lead the series 58-18.

The finale for the night saw a game that included nine ties and 16 lead changes. It was a first eight minutes that would trade basket for basket that saw Scott City lead 14-13 after the first period. The Beavers 17-14 with 5:45 left in the second stanza, when Colby used a 17-5 run to lead 31-22 at the break. To open the second half, Scott City scored 10 straight to lead 32-31. That’s when we continued to see back and forth lead changes. The Eagles took a 42-41 lead into the final period. Colby (16-3, 4-1 GWAC) led 44-41 early in the fourth quarter, when the Beavers responded with five straight to lead 46-44 with 5:42 left. Scott City (8-10, 2-3) responded back and led 49-46 with 3:11 left, and their final lead would be at 52-51 with1:47 left. The Eagles took the lead for good with 1:26 left on a bucket to go up 53-52. They hit one of two free throws with 27.6 seconds left to go up 54-52. The Beavers had a chance to tie or win it late, but a steal and layup by Shane Puckett put the game away for good in the final seconds that allowed Colby to come out with a 56-52 win.
Hunter Vaughn and Shane Puckett scored 14 points apiece for Colby, while Ben Busse added 11. Scott City got a career-high 20 points from Dylan Metzger while Jackson Rumford had 17 and Lawson Bailey added 13.
With the win, Colby has won five straight in Scott City, as well as eight of the last nine in the series. They lead the series since December, 1979 43-35.
