Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – It was a successful three days for the Garden City Buffalo Basketball teams in the 2nd Annual 2012 Southwest Classic hosted by Garden City High School, with the Lady Buffs and Buffalo boys sweeping their games with Wichita Trinity Academy, Denver South Colorado and Dumas Texas.

Garden City Buffaloes vs Wichita Trinity Academy Knights

For the Lady Buffs it started on last Thursday night with a convincing win over Wichita Trinity Academy by the 24 point margin 59-35. The Garden City girls were led by a trio of double digit scorers with junior guard Taryn Tempel leading the way by dropping in 21 points, freshman post player Jessica Carrillo added 12 and senior post player Johna McClelland grabbed 9 rebounds and chipped in 10 points for the victory that pushed the Lady Buffs to 2-1 on the season.

The Buffalo boys had a little tougher time with the Knights from Wichita Trinity, as it took overtime to get the win 72-69. Garden City had an early 6 point lead twice in the first half, but saw that evaporate to a 30-27 deficit at intermission time. However, in the 2nd half, the Buffalo boys came out of the locker room playing some very good defense and converted that into offense to gain a 12 point lead in the 4th quarter. The Knights were not about to give up and fought back to tie the game 59-59 at the end of regulation. In the extra 4:00 minute overtime period, the Buffaloes hit three 2 point shots and went 8-12 from the free throw line to ice the game and get the victory 72-69, pushing their record to 2-1. Four Buffalo players were in double digits, led by senior Austin Terpstra with 16, senior Bo Banner playing his first game of the season and junior point guard Tristan Nanininga each scored 11 and junior wing player Emillo Parr chipped in 10.

Garden City Buffaloes vs Denver South Colorado Rebels

The Garden City girls faced a tough athletic Lady Rebel team from Denver Colorado South High School on Friday night and the Lady Buffs got off to a great start shooting the ball extremely well and running in transition to knock down 24 points from the field and go 11-13 from the free throw line to gain a 35-22 lead at the break. In the 2nd half the Lady Rebels made several runs at Garden City, but the Lady Buffs found a way to hold them off down the stretch and win by the 9 point margin 57-48. The Garden City girls were led by three players in double figures, as Taryn Tempel poured in 17 points, sophomore post and wing player Jayme Bernbeck added 14 and Johna McClelland chipped in 11 to extend their record to 3-1 on the season.

For the Buffalo boys it was an extremely tough and hard fought game facing one the most talented and athletic teams they have played in quite some time, when they faced the Denver South Rebels. This was certainly a game of many runs, with the Buffaloes getting off to a great start and holding a 14-9 edge at the end of the first period. In the 2nd quarter it was some great transition baskets for the Rebels, along with very good perimeter shooting and playing above the rim that propelled the Rebels to the 27-24 halftime lead. In the second half it was more of the same for Denver, as their athletic ability led them to many great plays, but the Buffaloes stayed close. The real answer for Garden City was a tremendous game from senior Austin Terpstra after going scoreless in the first half, but the 2nd 16 minutes of play belonged to Terpstra, as he hit 6 two point field goals and went 7-8 from the free throw line for all of his 2nd half 19 points, along with 16 points from Tristan Nanininga to help the Buffaloes beat the Denver Rebels 57-55 taking their record to 3-1 on the season.

Garden City Buffaloes vs Dumas Texas Demons

On the final day of the 2012 SWK Classic, fatigue had set in and the energy level really waned, as the Lady Buffs found the Lady Demons from Dumas Texas to be a real challenge. Garden City fell behind 13-7 after one, but battled back in the 2nd quarter to be down only by one 22-21 at intermission time. In the second half the Lady Buffs would get more inside play from their post players with Jayme Bernbeck scoring 6 straight points in the 3rd period and junior shooting guard Taryn Tempel would get it going even though she was in foul trouble, but still knocked down 11 2nd half points for a game high 16, BernBeck chips in 11 and 8 from McClelland and the Lady Buffs pulled the final game out with a 50-46 victory sending their record to 4-1 and a sweep of the 2012 SWK Classic.

DAVID UPTON POST GAME WRAP-UP WITH DUMAS TEXAS

The Buffalo boys would start fairly well in their final game of the Classic holding on to a 21-16 lead at the end of one and five point advantage 31-26 at the break. In the second half it would become a back and forth game with several lead changes as the Demons came on strong with some three point shooting in the final two quarters to make it an extremely close game at the end. Garden City received a better game from Terpstra in the 4th quarter as he scored 9 of his 17 points in the 4th quarter alone, Nanininga chipped in 14 and junior wing player Hunter Delgado added 9 propelling the Buffaloes to their 3rd straight win 59-52 in the final game of the 2012 SWK Classic and sending the Buffalo boys to a 4-1 record.
