Colby wrestling sweeps GWAC wrestling team titles

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The final tournament of the regular season saw the seven Great West Activties Conference schools meet at the Scott Community Events Center on Friday afternoon, as wrestlers and teams were looking to improve seeding heading into regional competition. Colby would narrowly win both the boys and girls team races, as they edged Scott City in both the boys and girls team scores to get the sweep of the titles.
For the boys, only three schools have won a GWAC team title in its 15-year history. Scott City had won the previous seven titles, as the Eagles defeated the Beavers by 6.5 points to win their first league title since 2017, while Ulysses finished third. Colby won four league individual titles, with Julian Salcido at 106, Ryder Dempewolf at 113, Simon Salcido at 126 and Dawson DeGood at 165. Scott City got tournament titles from Alex Rodriguez at 138, Matthew Wheeler at 150, Waylon Ricker at 157 and Easton Eisenhour at 175. Ulysses saw Jaxsen Salinas at 144 and Caden Beims win at 285, while Holcomb got tournament titles from Angelo Otero at 120 and Haegen Hartman at 132. Cimarron’s Ben Vogel took the 215-pound title.
It came down to a half of a point in the girls team race, as Colby had 80 points and Scott City finished with 79.5. The Lady Eagles got tournament wins from Adrian Salcido at 100, Aspen Sharpe at 105 and Joslyn Bartlett at 120 pounds. Scott City’s Haylie McDaniel won at 110 and Ashlyn Rose took the title at 155 pounds. Holcomb saw McKenzie Simon at 135 and Abigail Redden win at 235 pounds. Ulysses also had two league champions in Jeymi Rosales at 125 and Alex Garza at 145. Hugoton’s Lauren Nix won at 170 and Brisa Molinar of Cimarron was the lone wrestler at 190.
Girls regionals will be next Friday and Saturday, with Colby, Goodland, Holcomb, Hugoton, Scott City and Ulysses heading to the McPherson Super Regional in Class 4A, as Cimarron heads to Russell for the Class 3-2-1A Super Regional. The boys will take place on February 22, when Colby, Goodland and Scott City head to the 4A Abilene Regional, while Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses are at the Rose Hill Regional. Cimarron hosts the boys 3-2-1A Regional Tournament the same day.
