Scott City collects two road wins in Ulysses

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the regular season is winding down quickly, wins late in the season become big in regards to seeding for postseason play. Scott City would head to Ulysses on Friday night in hopes to improve their seeding. They would accomplish that, as the Lady Beavers would dominate in a 54-19 win, while the boys would pull away late for a 57-49 win.

Ulysses would put up a fight early on, grabbing a 5-1 lead and 9-8 lead late in the first quarter. After that, it was all Scott City. The Lady Beavers would close the opening frame on an 8-2 run to lead 16-11 after the first quarter, and use an 18-2 run to lead 54-13 late in the first half before leading 36-14 at the break. They used an 11-2 run in the third quarter to lead 47-16, and coasted to the 54-19 win. Over the final three periods, Scott City (9-7, 4-5 GWAC) used a 38-8 run over Ulysses (1-15, 0-9).

Avery Lewis led the way with 12 points, while Piper Fox added 11 points and Kaylee Felker had a career-high nine, all in the first half. The Lady Beavers went 9-12 from the free throw line and had 12 turnovers. Ulysses was led by Clarissa Sianuqui and Xitlaly Castillo with five points apiece. The Lady Tigers were 3-7 from the foul line and had 17 turnovers

Scott City now leads the series since 1980 53-37, and have won 10 straight in the series, the longest run by either side. Ulysses has now lost 12 consecutive games.

When the teams met, it was an eight-point win for the Beavers at 56-48, where they had to pull away late. Friday’s game was similar, with the difference being that both teams scored one more point apiece. After 15 lead changes and seven ties, Scott City was able to get the win in the end. The Beavers led 13-10 after the first quarter. And for a majority of the night when they had a three point lead, the Tigers responded with a three or took the lead. Scott City (12-4, 5-4 GWAC) led 27-21 with 1:30 left before halftime, until a Ulysses three pulled them to within 27-24 at the break. Both teams struggled scoring to open the second half. It wasn’t until the 4:22 mark of the third stanza where the Tigers broke the scoring seal. They started on an 11-4 run and led 35-31 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Scott City would find their offense late in the period, and take a 38-37 lead heading into the fourth period. Ulysses (5-11, 2-7) last lead 46-44 with 4:18 left. The Beavers would find themselves tied at 48 with 3:37 remaining. Scott City would close the final 3:16 on a 9-1 run, and picked up a clutch three-pointer sprinkled in there to go up 54-48 with 1:51 left. The Beavers went 6-10 down the stretch at the line to pick up a 57-49 win.

Jackson Rumford had 19 points in the first half, and finished with a career-high 34 points, picking up hist fourth career 30-point performance, just 367 days after his 33-point performance at Lakin. Avery Radke added 11 points, all in the second half, as Scott City finished 13-17 at the foul line and finished with 12 turnovers. Ulysses got 19 points from Julian Meraz and 10 from Caden Ledesma, as the Tigers went only 2-6 at the charity line and had 15 turnovers.

Scott City has now won eight of the last 11 meetings in the series, and now hold a 62-26 series lead since 1980. The Beavers hit the 12-win mark for the first time since the 2018-19 season and the five wins are the most in league play since the 2019-20 season.
