Scott City wins two in Cimarron

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After an 18-day hiatus of games, Scott City returned to the court on Tuesday night, as the Beavers visited Cimarron in GWAC play. Scott City would get the 2025 portion of the schedule off on a good note, as the Lady Beavers held off a late Bluejay rally in a 59-50 win, while the Beaver boys pulled away in the second half to take a 53-28 victory.

Scott City came out leading 6-2 early on, only to see the Lady Bluejays rally with an 11-2 run to lead 13-9 with 1:29 left in the first quarter. The Lady Beavers would build a big lead over the next two quarters that looked insurmountable at the time. A run of 22-3 gave them a 34-16 lead with 6:41 left in the third frame. Cimarron would rally with a 9-3 run to get to within 37-25 with 2:33 remaining in the third period. Scott City (3-4, 1-2 GWAC) countered with six straight, and built a 43-25 lead with under a minute left in the quarter. The Lady Beavers led 47-32 with 6:36 left. It looked like they were well on their way to the win, but the Lady Bluejays had other intentions. Cimarron (2-5, 1-3) scored the next 11 points over a three-minute span, and pulled to within 47-43 wiht 2:49 left. Scott City would settle down and pulled away, with six straight to tlead 53-43 with 1:11 remaining. They built a 59-47 lead late before picking up a 59-50 win.

Three Lady Beavers were in double figures, as Avery Lewis and Megan Trout had 12 points, as did Crissa Irvin, who poured in a new career-high 12 points. Scott City was 13-25 from the foul line and had 14 turnovers. Leading Cimarron was Taegan Eskam with 13 points, while Janae Fugitt added 12. The Lady Bluejays went 16-23 from the free throw line and committed 15 turnovers.

Scott City has now won three straight in the series, which is the first time since 2019-2020. Their 59 points were the second most scored by them in the series. Cimarron leads the all-time series 17-12.

The No. 7 team in Class 3A slowly pulled away in a game where they hung their hat on defense. Playing without starting point guard Eloy Ruelas, the Beavers were able to get Brooks Bailey back in the lineup for the first time this year. Scott City was tied twice in the first eight minutes of play, before taking a 10-8 lead after the opening frame. After the Bluejays pulled to within 12-10 with a little over a minute in to the second quarter, the Beavers limited Cimarron to just four points the rest of the half. Scott City (6-1, 2-1 GWAC) scored nine straight over five-minute stretch of the second frame to lead 21-10 with 51 seconds remaining before the break. While the Bluejays would cut it to seven, the Beavers would get the final basket of the half to go up nine heading in to the locker room. They scored the first nine points of the third quarter, taking a 32-14 lead with 4:16 left in the period. Cimarron (2-5, 0-4) scored six straight to make it 32-20 with 18 seconds left in the third stanza. Scott City scored the final points of the third quarter, and stromed out to a 42-20 lead with 5:01 left. The Beavers would lead by as many as 26, before settling for a 53-28 win. It was a season-low allowed by Scott City, and a season-low of points by Cimarron.

Jackson Rumford tallied 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Avery Radke had 11 points in the game. The Beavers were 11-12 at the charity line and had 10 turnovers. Trace Kopper led Cimarron with 10 points, as they went 4-8 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has now won nine straight in the series, and have a 22-1 all-time series advantage. It’s the second straight year Scott City has started out 6-1.
