U.S. 83 major construction project temporarily closes access to east Plymell Road south of Garden City
Starting on April 29, the Kansas Department of Transportation will close access to E Plymell Road at U.S. 83 south of Garden City for two weeks.
The closure is necessary to do the dirt work for the new U.S. 83 alignment. Local traffic is encouraged to find appropriate alternate routes. Once the dirt work in this area is complete, a small section of E Plymell Road will be graveled until the road can be paved with asphalt, which is highlighted in green on the map.
This project starts 2.5 miles north of the Haskell/Finney county line and extends 12.7 miles north to the bridge over the Arkansas River and will reconstruct and realign U.S. 83 into a super two highway, featuring side-by-side passing lanes.
More county road closures are expected later this construction season. KDOT will continue to provide updates on construction impacts as the project moves forward.
Sporer Land Development Inc., of Oakley, is the contractor on this $44.5 million project, which is expected to be completed by the end of October 2027, weather permitting.
